Landlords. Are you ready?

 

Do you have a property you let out in Barking and Dagenham. If so, you will need a licence.

Already have a licence? Have you checked that it is in date? If expired, you will need to reapply.

Barking and Dagenham Licence Applications open from 17th March 2025 for you to apply for your new property licence.

Barking and Dagenham, are committed to making sure all residents have a safe, comfortable, and well-maintained homes. To help achieve this, they run property licensing schemes that support good property management in the private rental sector.

If you’re a landlord, you may need to apply for a licence to rent out your property legally. Licensing helps ensure that homes meet safety and quality standards, giving both landlords and tenants peace of mind.

There are various types of licences to apply for. This is depending on the type. For example, a family home or a shared house.

As part of the application process, they will check that landlords meet their legal responsibilities and are considered "fit and proper persons." This normally include property inspections to identify and fix any potential safety risks for tenants.

The current and upcoming licencing schemes are:

  1. Mandatory HMO (House in Multiple Occupation) Licence
    • For properties rented to five or more people from two or more households.
  2. Additional HMO Licence (Starting 9 January 2025)
    • For properties rented to three or four people from two or more households.
    • Applications open on Monday, 9 December 2024.
  3. Selective Licence (Starting 6 April 2025)
    • For properties rented to a single household.
    • Applications open on Monday, 17 March 2025.

 

Property licences are important to make sure that landlords are improving housing quality and safety and to protect tenants while also supporting responsible landlords.
