Why Romford Matters - Shop Locally

Romford is in the heart of Havering - Rich in history, culture, and a business community. From independent cafes and family-run shops to innovative startups, our town is full of hardworking entrepreneurs who are trying to keep our local economy alive.

Romford was once a thriving market town dating back from 1247. Anyone who has lived in Romford for many years will remember this market that was once the main hub for trading your wares from cattle to vegetables to clothing. These were the days well before Primark or the Pound shop. This was a place to get a bargain.

Now we are seeing shops closing, big brands gone, the likes of Debenhams, C & A, Littlewoods, and many more.

Victoria Road alone, was thriving, with local business, selling prams, shoes, clothing, and even major bank names had their business premises here, again bringing in the footfall from people using the banks and then shopping locally.

GBP Estates are an independent business and have been running for 16 years and we are so pleased that locals use our company to sell, buy and rent their properties, again keeping it local instead of using online companies.

Businesses are now facing a challenge like never before. Thats where we ask everyone to help out by shopping locally. From eating in your local independent cafes, buying your sandwiches from them at lunchtimes and not the high street chains. These are freshly made and with that extra touch. One of my favourites is Tasty Cafe and Langton’s in Victoria Road, independent and served with a smile. What local business is your favourite?

I know we are all busy and do not always have the time to go from one shop to the other but if you don’t use them, they will disappear.

Are you a local business owner, we would love to hear from you and come to interview you for our Facebook page, TikTok, and Instagram.

Shopping local matters. Why? For creating jobs, community spirit and for the future of our town.

The council are holding a Business Showcase event at Havering Town Hall in Romford on Thursday 20th March. The event will feature businesses from across the borough demonstrating the wide range that Havering's High Streets and economy has to offer.
